Strategies and Tips to Win
Mahjong Titans is a version of Mahjong that fits into the Mahjong Solitaire category. The popularisation of this game around the world happened, in a way, because it was included as one of the games of Microsoft’s Office Package for Windows Vista and Windows 7.
Just like on the traditional Mahjong, the Titans game has 144 tiles on the table and just like the other Mahjong Solitaire games, in Titans your goal is to match identical tiles and eliminate them two by two. Although the rules of this game are very simple, Mah jongg Titans is a very complex game and using some strategies and tips would certainly help you win more games. Check out some of this tips bellow:
Bonus and Extra Points
The points in Mahjong Titans are given to you at every pair of identical tiles you match and eliminate correctly. However, there is a way for you to win more points for your tiles. To assure you get the your extra points, after matching a pair of tiles, look for another pair with the same number or the same style. For example, if you’ve just matched a pair of Bamboo number 3 tiles, look for another pair of bamboo tiles or another pair of numbers 3 tiles to match, that way you will win extra points.
If you match and eliminate pairs of tiles that have the same number and the same style as the last pair you’ve just eliminated you will get even more extra points. So, always analyse the whole board looking for these tiles to match, thinking of the next pair you’ll eliminate, that way you will get even more points. However, don’t do these matches if they interfere on your original strategy for the game. Sometimes it is better to win fewer points and have more chances to win the game than to have many points and end up losing the game because of a misplaced move, or thoughtless a matching of tiles.
Some versions of Mahjong titans feature an “Undo” button. This tool allows you to revert your last move. This is very useful if you have made a bad choice on your last move, allowing you to go back to the position you were before that move and not make the same mistake again.
To activate the “undo” feature, in some games, you must press CTRL + Z on your keyboard. On this game, each time you use this feature you will lose two points and there is no maximum number of times you can use this feature.
The lack of limits on this feature can be extremely useful, since you can undo and “infinity” of moves and go back to the point in the game where it didn’t seem to be completely lost, and maybe you can even be able to fix a seemingly lost game.
More advice for the Game
On the Windows’ version of Mahjong Titans, if you press the “H” key on your keyboard, some tips of the tiles that can be matched on your game will be shown to you. In some other versions, you will see the button “Hint” (as the name suggests) that will work in the same way, offering you hints of tiles can be paired up.
You should pay close attention to this feature, because many times the combination shown to you might not be the best move possible at that moment in your game. The hints are made randomly and not with the intention of showing you the best match possible.
This tool can be very useful, generally. Especially when you find yourself “stuck” and you can’t find anymore tiles to match. So, use it when you need it!
The Visual Aspect of the Tiles
Many versions of the game allow you to customize the appearance of the tiles that you will play with, like this version here and this version here as well. In the Windows’ version of Mahjong Titan, you can alter the design and the colours of the tiles, as well as the background image of the game; to do so you only have to press “ALT+G” on your keyboard.
Although your goal is to match and eliminate as many tiles as possible in this game, you should always be attentive to that, so you don’t run out of possible matches and end up stuck; every time you run out of possible matches, the game is over (you can also use the tool “Undo” to revert your moves back to a position where you may be able to fix your game). So, to make sure you don’t run out of possibilities in the game and end up stuck, losing the game. Be careful and attentive while playing and reconsider every single move you make before you eliminate any pairs of tiles.
One good tip is to start matching the tiles that are at the most elevated position on the board, which means on top of the other piles of tiles, because by eliminating those tiles you are uncovering other tiles underneath them and finding even more options in your game. Also, try to eliminate first the tiles that are on the borders (the edges) of the screen. After eliminating those tiles, start matching and eliminating the ones in the centre of the screen.
Another good tip is to always pay attention to when you have three identical tiles in your table that are available to be matched (we call them triplets). Before you pair up two of them (to eliminate two out of the three available), make sure your move won’t hold you back from pairing the remaining one further in the game. Try to find the fourth tile, and if you can’t see it yet, be very careful making this move, because the tile you will need might be at the bottom of a pile and it could take you a long time to find it, potentially causing you to be stuck at some point.
